Pinoys recognized in Asian Heroes Awards in Canada
Despite the down times, there are still many reasons to hold your head high and be proud of your race.
In Canada, Filipino entrepreneur and a Filipino-Canadian nurse were amongst the 6 awardees of the 2nd Asian Heroes award.
Felicisimo Gorospe, chairman emeritus of the VGent Group of Companies, was named as the Asian Hero from the Philippines.
Coming from a poor family in Ilocos Sur, Gorospe was able to make it as an entrepreneur.
He assists in sending hundreds of poor children to school with the help of his company, VGent Foundation.
In 2009, the foundation assists at least 100 scholars yearly and promises to do so for the next 100 years
“I’m preparing the trust fund so that even if we will no longer be around, the earnings from the trust fund will be sufficient to continue the project,” he said.
Meanwhile, Phoebe Carantes,a Canadian with Filipino roots, is a registered nurse with the Fraser Health Institute BC, Carantes gives up a lucrative career opted to be a volunteer for healthcare services to war-torn Afghanistan where is she being recognized as an Asian Hero.
“If I would have the opportunity to give back to this country and also to serve our men and women in uniform in Afghanistan, I will do it anytime,” she said.
