"James Yap dedicated his MVP award to his no.1 fan!"
Purefoods ace gunner James Yap won the Best Player of the Conference award last Wednesday, March 3, at the Araneta Coliseum in Cubao, Quezon City.
He is the 2005-2006 season’s Most Valuable Player, becoming the first Purefoods player to win the award since Rey Evangelista in the 2002 Governors Cup.
The Negros Occidental native garnered a total of 1,380 votes won convincingly over Willie Miller and Sta. Lucia’s do-it-all forward Kelly Williams. Yap dedicated the honor to his teammates and the entire Purefoods coaching staff.
“Nagpapasalamat ako sa teammates ko, sa management at sa coaching staff sa tulong nila para makuha ko itong award,” said Yap, who was also named the Handy Flex Finals MVP by the PBA Press Corps.
Yap also credited the support of his family, as well as the family of actress wife Kris Aquino. But the star cager offered and dedicated his BPC award to his mother-in-law and former President Cory Aquino, who passed away last year, who he mentioned as his “No. 1 supporter”.
"Para sa kanya ito, I’m sure masayang-masaya siya para sa akin," Yap said after the pre-game ceremony.
The late president Aquino used to be the "peacemaker" between the James Yap and Kris Aquino every time they would have misunderstanding.
"Nanonood siya every game," James told ABS-CBN News during Cory’s funeral. "Di ko talaga makalimutan pumasok kami sa finals, pinagro-rosary niya ako. Kaya sobrang mami-miss ko si mom."
Queen of all media Kris Aquino even blurted out that she had actually ordered a very special gift for her husband immediately after they got home.
