Health workers deployed by BJMP to aid in curing TB

Health workers are being deployed at various detention facilities in Metro Manila by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) to tend to inmates with tuberculosis (TB) Monday.
Director Chief Superintendent for BJMP-National Capital Region, Benito Dorigo announced that the action is a part of their efforts to help contain, prevent and cure TB within the jails. Tuberculosis is the second leading cause of death among inmates in the Philippine jails according to records, next only to cardio-repiratory arrest.
The health care workers sent by the bureau who were trained on the conduct of Direct Sputum Smear Microscopy (DSSM) examination will closely monitor the progress of suspected inmates with TB who are receiving anti-TB treatment until they are free from the disease, Dorigo said.
"Before, we only refer suspected TB patients to health clinics and hospitals, but now, the jail itself can be a treatment site because of the training of our health workers on DSSM," the director said.
Dorigo also announced that an isolated area in the jails shall be allocated as a treatment site for inmates with TB.
