6.4 Magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan

taiwan earthquake

A 6.4 magnitude quake shook Taiwan on Thursday March 4 which has caused damages and interrupted the communications surrounding the island, particularly the county of Kaohsiung.

Fortunately there was no tsunami alert reported.  The director of the Central Weather Bureau’s Seismology Center Kuo Kai-wen, said the Taiwan quake was not related to the temblor that struck Chile over the weekend, which killed more than 800 people.   A fire in a textile factory broke out after the quake and one train was reported to have shifted faintly off its tracks. In the city of Kaohsiung, subway service was temporarily interrupted.  There were reports that a temporary housing in the town of Jiashian collapsed because of the earthquake.

Earthquakes in Taiwan are recurrent, but the damage is only minimal.  Nevertheless, a powerful 7.6 magnitude rocked central Taiwan, casualties were more than 2,300 people. Then in 2006, a 6.7 magnitude temblor in the south of Kaohsiung damaged the undersea cables and interrupted telephone lines and internet service to millions in entire Asia
