Wanted: 5000 New Teachers for Public Schools
Department of Education (DepEd) Assistant Secretary Jess Mateo says the department hired 5000 teachers early this year and still needs 5,000 teachers more. Those who may be interested for teaching posts in the department can file their applications in division offices. Applicants must have passed the Professional Regulation Commission’s licensure exam for teachers.
Mateo said the department has a P1.6 billion budget this year that includes the hiring of 10,000 teachers. With the new salary standardization level, entry-level teachers will earn P16,000 a month.
The 10,000 teachers are still not enough to fill in the department’s need, Mateo said. This is in response to a teacher’s organization’s claim that 120,000 teachers will not be enough to meet the needs of public schools. It’s unlikely that education in the country will reach global standard if the situation stays the same, Teachers’ Dignity Coalition spokesperson Emmalyn Policarpio said.
DepEd, however, said will make sure it hires enough teachers to meet the shortage in public schools and might plan hiring 70,000 new teachers more next school year.
