SAF dinner with military before Mamasapano operation confirmed by Defense officials
Confirming the revelation of Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, Defense and military officials said that commanders had dinner with Special Action Force (SAF) officials the night before the Mamasapano operations.
However, the occasion was not disclosed.
During the 118th anniversary of the Army, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said to the reporters the that a member of the SAF had invited 45th IB commander Lt. Col. Romeo Bautista and 601st Brigade commander Col. Melquiades Feliciano for dinner.
But Gazmin refused to comment on the allegation of Trillanes that the purpose of the dinner was to ensure that the Army would not be able to get involved on the operation.
Armed Forces chief Gen. Gregorio Pio Catapang made a confirmation about the dinner meeting. Like Gazmin, he also refused to give additional details.
Catapang, meanwhile said he has suggested Malacanang to re-appoint Maj. Gen. Edmundo Pangilinan to his two-star rank. Relieved SAF chief Getulio Napenas earlier accused that Pangilinan, commander of the 6th Infantry Division, of restraining the assistance for the troopers. Catapang added that he trusts Pangilinan “100 percent.”
