Private elementary, high schools won't increase fees this year

DepEd

Despite the fear of the possibilities that tuition fees for this year might increase of  Private elementary, high schools, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced Friday that private elementary and high schools will not increase tuition fees for the school year 2010 to 2011.

"Since we have not requested any request, our belief is no (private) schools will increase tuition fees. So far, good news!" DepEd Secretary Mona Valisno announced.

In addition to that Valisno also announced that the school opening is on June 14.

DepEd is expecting at least 22 million elementary and highschool students this year, more than 1 million compared to last year’s elementary and secondary student population.

The DepEd’s problem in textbooks have been solved as they expect a 1:1 book per student ratio this year.

The new books will also be acquired by the DepEd with donations wich will come from the private sector that has reached P7 billion.

However, Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Executive Director Julito Vitriolo confirmed reports that 339 colleges and universities will increase tuition fees for this school year.

The percentage of the increase in tuition fees is 6% to 13%.

Classes in the tertiary level will open "by the second week of June or not earlier than the first week [of June]."

Because of the increase in tuition fees in the tertiary level, CHED expects more students from private schools to move to state universities and colleges this year.

According to  CHED’s records, the number of transferring private school students has been increasing every year.

Vitriolo said most likely 30,000 to 60,000 private school students will transfer to state universities and colleges this year.
