Indonesian court dismisses appeal of Filipina in death row
Indonesia’s Supreme Court has reportedly did not accept an application by a Filipina on death row for a judicial review
of her case. The latest development is bringing her closer to execution together with other foreign drug convicts.
Apart from Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso, two high-profile Australian inmates and convicts from France, Brazil, Ghana and Nigeria are scheduled to face the firing squad after they recently had requests for presidential clemency turned down.
In her appeal for a judicial review, Veloso’s lawyers had reportedly stated that she was not given with a capable translator during her first trial.
However, the Supreme Court’s website said that judges on Wednesday denied Veloso’s application for a review of her sentence. The court did not give details about the ruling and a court spokesman was not immeadiately reached for comment.
Earlier, Veloso was nabbed at Yogyakarta airport, on the main island of Java, carrying 2.6 kilograms (5.73 pounds) of heroin on a flight from Malaysia.
