Globe reveals scam via text

Globe Telecom Inc. has advised the public about  a syndicate using text messages to get money.

According to Globe it has uncovered a new text scam that requires a mobile phone user to switch off his phone, after which the scammers would call the victim’s family at home and tell them he has been kidnapped. The syndicate will then direct the family to send ransom via money transfer.

Globe said official advisories and announcements made by them are sent using special 3- or 4-digit numbers (e.g. 4438, 8888 or 290) only.

"There are no advisories or any type of message sent to subscribers using regular 7-digit mobile phone numbers. Globe will not ask subscribers to shut off their mobile phones."

Globe is inviting the public to report immediately any suspicious text messages by calling Globe hotline 211 or TM hotline 730-1000. Subscribers may also air any bad experiences via social networking sites Facebook (Globe Angel Roque), and twitter (@Talk2GLOBE).
