Earthquake with 5.4-magnitude rocked Ilocos Norte
On Thursday Morning Ilocos Norte was shook by a 5.4 earthquake, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
According to the agency the epicenter of the earthquake was located 30 kilometers southwest of Laoag City at 10:24 a.m.
Below are the intensities of the earthquake from different areas.
Intensity IV – Bangued, Abra; Narvacan, Ilocos Sur
Intensity III – Sinait, Santo Domingo, Magsingal, San Idelfonso, Bantay, Santa, Caoayan, Vigan, Santa Catalina, San Vicente in Ilocos Sur; Callao, Peñablanca, Cagayan; Laoag City, Ilocos Norte
Intensity II – Bucay, Abra
Phivolcs added that intensity IV is "felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck."
"Hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner, plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle. Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Waters in containers oscillate strongly. Rumbling sound may sometimes be heard."
The earthquake was ruled to be a tectonic in origin, caused by the movement of a local fault. It had a depth of 9 kilometers.
Phivolcs maintained that aftershocks can be experienced.
