DOST Usec Yumul replaces Nilo as PAGASA chief
An announcement was made by President Benigno Aquino III on Friday that Dr. Prisco D. Nilo was relieved as the director of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration or PAGASA.
The reason given by President Aquino is that Nilo had some differences with his immediate superior in the Department of Science and Technology, which directly supervise PAGASA.
No name was given for the "immediate superior," but upon checking with PAGASA, the agency is directly under the DOST undersecretary for research and development headed by Graciano Yumul.
In an interview with DOST Secretary Mario Montejo, he said that they have already the names of those who are eligible for the position to replace Nilo.
"We already have the names and we are looking at people who have already with PAGASA and even outsiders. In the next three months, we will know his replacement," he said.
Montejo confirmed that Undersecretary Graciano Yumul Jr. will temporarily take over the weather bureau as he is more qualified to handle the agency with his familiarity with technical disciplines, while Nilo will be transferred to the department’s main office to conduct some special research.
Nilo’s removal came three weeks after Aquino reprimanded PAGASA for failing to predict that typhoon Basyang would directly hit Metro Manila. "He never really bothered to explain why Typhoon Basyang moved in a different direction," President Aquino said.
