Death of hundreds of Chickens in La Union, due to El Niño phenomenon

The dry spell has taken over the chickens in La Union province.  From brownouts to dried up crops, there is no stopping the dry spell that has been continuously hovering the country.

Hundreds of chickens have died because of heat stroke in at least two farms in La Union.  A record of 1,200 chicks and 2,000 45-day chickens have died because of lack of water to drink at a farm in Balaoan. The farm’s deepwell, which is the main source of water for the chickens have dried up.

Other wells in the province have been drying up as well because of lack of rain. The caretakers said that if the El Niño phenomenon in the province continue to intensify, chances are, remaining chickens that have also become weak may die.

In Santol town, caretakers said 6 to 10 chickens die daily due to heat stroke. Even the production of egg is also affected. Chickens appear to have lost their appetite, which leads to decrease in egg production.

Meanwhile thousands of tilapia died in Pangasinan province.  Pangasinan is one of the 14 drought-stricken provinces in Luzon and Visayas.  According to Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), the decreasing water at the Magat Dam deprived the fish of dissolved oxygen.  BFAR is advising the  fish cage operators to perform "premature harvest" so that the remaining fishes will have enough dissolved oxygen.
