Brownouts hit Metro and Luzon provinces again

meralcoBad news again for electricity consumers, since brownouts will  occur again in some parts of Metro Manila and other Luzon provinces after 3 powerplants were unable to deliver electricity to the Luzon power grid on Wednesday, March 3.

The National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) clarified that Masinloc 1 with a capacity of 315 megawatts (MW), Calaca 2 with 180 MW, and Sta. Rita 30 with 260 MW broke down, thus causing a 236-MW electricity shortage in the Luzon grid.  According to Meralco, the rotating brownouts happened between 1-3 p.m.

Sta. Cruz and Tondo districts in Manila, and the provinces of Batangas, Bulacan, Cavite and Laguna, as well as some parts of Quezon province were affected. This situation also came about last Monday, March 1, but normalized on Tuesday.

The outages that happened on Wednesday were due to low levels of water in Caliraya lake.  It affected the producing capacity of the hydroelectric plants in the area.  Sad part is, if there would be a continuous lowering of water levels, most likely, we will be experiencing more brownouts in Luzon.  Meanwhile, there is no development in the situation of Mindanao.  The water levels in their dam is continously dropping.

According to Energy Secretary Angelo Reyes,  government should study on how to develop our oil, gas and coal resources as well as strengthen the expansion and usage of renewable and environmentally friendly alternative energy sources.
