2000 residents evacuated, 3 died, chemical leak from barge in Batangas
A chemical leak from a barge in Batangas that caused the 3 deaths made the residents to be evacuated. Reports states that the leak started around 4:30 p.m. , Tuesday while the barge was docked in Sta. Maria village in Bauan town. According to the Batangas provincial police Chief Senior Superintendent Albert Supapo the workers were repairing the barge when the leak happened. He also added that those who died from suffocation were not immediately identified even as three others were rushed to the hospital. Supapo said 400 families or 2,000 residents near the wharf were evacuated to a nearby school. They are still trying to reach the owner of the barge to explain the cause of the incident, and coordinating with the Philippine Coast Guard to investigate the matter.
Classes in the area were suspended Wednesday.
