Thai protesters admit defeat after deadly army onslaught

Leaders of Thai protesters gave up Wednesday and addressed to thousands of "Red Shirt" supporters to finish their weeks-long rally after an army assault on their fortified encampment left at least five people dead.

Attack erupted after military armored vehicles smashed through barricades erected around the anti-government Red Shirts’ extensive rally base in central Bangkok and armed troops moved in.

In a televised address, the military later announced  that the situation was under control and it had stopped operations against the protesters, whose supporters in northeast Thailand set fire to a provincial hall.

A night-time curfew would be imposed across the capital, this was according to the defense minister.

An emotional  protest leader declared on stage that the Reds would halt their occupation of an upscale shopping and hotel district in the heart of the capital where they have been camped for six weeks.

Meanwhile, many countries have alerted their nations against traveling to Thailand. Australia Wednesday advised travelers to not visit Bangkok, due to the deteriorating security situation.
