Former Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens dies in Alaska plane crash
Former Sen. Ted Stevens and ex-NASA chief Sean O’Keefe was aboard on a float plane when it crashed into a remote mountainside in Alaska. It killed the longtime senator and four others, authorities said Tuesday.
O’Keefe and his teenage son was able to endure the crash with broken bones and other injuries, according to former NASA spokesman Glenn Mahone. The O’Keefes were in the the mountain with several volunteers who found the wreckage and tended to the injured until rescuers arrived Tuesday morning.
O’Keefe and Stevens are longtime fishing buddies. They were panning a trip near the tragic plane crash.
The crash was an overwhelming event since this is where Stevens became the most beloved political figure in Alaska history in his 40 years in the Senate, obtaining a reputation as a tireless advocate for projects that gained billions of federal dollars to the state. He was 86.
