BP begins'static kill'
Reportedly on Tuesday, BP engineers has started to pump drilling mud into the capped Gulf of Mexico oil well. This is the much anticipated first step to permanently plug the leak.
The heavy drilling mud started flowing into the failed blowout preventer located atop the rogue well around 4 p.m. ET, starting a "static kill" of the leak.
The "static kill" is used since engineers are attempting to plug oil that’s not flowing, held in check since July 15 by a 40-ton cap.
After a day-long delay, pressure readings coming from the cap had shown the procedure could safely begin.
