Afghan military veteran kills 9 Americans

An Afghan soldier opened fire during a meeting at Kabul airport killing eight American troops and a U.S. contractor. The deadliest chapter up to now of an Afghan turning against his allies, officials said.

The Afghan Defense Ministry said that the Afghan officer, who was a 20-year veteran of the Afghan military apparently being trained as a pilot, started firing at the Americans after an argument inside the operations room of the Afghan Air Corps at Kabul airport.

"Suddenly, in the middle of the meeting, shooting started, after the shooting started, we saw a number of Afghan army officers and soldiers running out of the building. Some were even throwing themselves out of the windows to get away," announced Afghan Air Corps spokesman Col. Bahader, who uses only one name.

Five Afghan soldiers were hurt. An Afghan soldier was shot – in the wrist – but much of the personnels suffered broken bones and cuts, Col. Bahader said.

According to an Afghan pilot who spoke on condition not to be named, identified the gunman as Ahmad Gul from Tarakhail district of Kabul province.

The shooter was killed in the incident, officials said.
